Walking Paris

Posted on Posted in Architecture, Art, Blog, Design

I think I have mentioned before that I love Paris!I have visited the city many times and dropped by the usual tourist destinations like the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay. Once inside after waiting online, reality sets in… it would take days to see all that is offered. On our latest trip an effort was made to not let those precious few hours slip away….. waiting. We decided to walk, talk, eat, relax, walk some more, talk and eat again.  We roamed the Paris streets, but this time included planned, liesurely  stops for lunch and dinner at well researched dining spots. We […]

Sir Paul Smith

I received a book titled Hello, My Name is Paul Smith for Christmas and I could not put it down until I finished reading it from cover to cover. Sir Paul Smith generously shares his backstory about his journey from opening one small shop in Nottingham, England to becoming an international presence in the design world today. The book is beautifully illustrated, including much of his own photography and it is an inspiration for those seeking to learn more about the business of design. His design focus originally was men’s fashion, establishing his first store in 1970 and in my opinion waited far […]

Dutch Innovation

The Dutch designer, Dirk Vander Kooij conceived the “robot arm” a new technique inspired by an old 3D printer for bringing designs to life. An endless thread of synthetic material sourced from recycled refrigerator materials is extruded creating unique textures and colorations for Studio Dirk Vander Kooij’s designs. The image above illustrates the Endless Flow Dining Chair along with Dirk in conversation with a visitor to ICFF 2013 in New York City where he displayed examples of his furniture. As an ICFF guest speaker with Material ConneXion Dr. Andrew Dent the designer presented this unique technology and described it’s role in future product development. […]

Illuminating Fashion

When I passed by this shop early in the day my eye was originally drawn to the jacket with the red collar and cuffs. I took a double take later that evening on the way to dinner.  The illuminated dresses provide the only lighting for this shop at night highlighting the sheer, delicate nature of the fabrics. This creative, whimsical display takes on a completely different look at night than by day. The shop can be found on the Rue Christine in Paris, France.

The AGO, Frank & Evan

Posted on Posted in Art, Blog, Design, Spaces

The AGO has changed significantly since our last visit, which was prior to the 2008 completion of the Frank Gehry designed “Transformation“. The goal of this renovation appears to have been to unify the exterior, expand the gallery space and improve the visitor experience. This includes a dramatically designed new entrance and facade combining wood and glass elements and materials that continue as you venture through the renovated interior spaces. The first stop was lunch at Frank with a stroll after through the AGO Gift Shop before taking in the exhibits. EVAN PENNY: RE FIGURED is showing until February 10th, extended from the original […]

Modular Evolution

George Nelson and Charles & Ray Ames, are the talented industrial designers credited with the development of the classic designs that continue to be a part of Herman Miller’s product line to this day. However another man who walked into DJ De Pree’s showroom one day in 1931 became the man to create the modular designs for Herman Miller that are considered to be the first systems approach to office furniture. The seeds for Rhode’s modern approach to design were planted at the time of his sudden death in 1944, paving the way for those that followed.Gilbert Rhode’s assistant […]
